What is Hamilton 68?

Hamilton 68 was (and is) a project that claimed to track Russian disinformation on social media. The project never revealed any of their sources for the data they used to track this alleged disinfo. Nevertheless, mainstream reporters were actively using the Hamilton 68 dashboard for years, reporting whatever it produced as "Russian disinformation" regardless of the fact they had no idea what the source was for any such claims.

CNN, CBS, MSNBC, PBS, NBC, ABC, NY Times, Washington Post, Mother Jones, and The Nation all took Hamilton 68's information to be almost god-like without verification. These outlets used this information to support the claim that Trump was only able to win the 2016 election with illegal support from Russian disinformation on social media.

We now know that this story is completely untrue.

When Elon Musk opened Twitter's informational doors by releasing what is now known as the "Twitter Files" reporter Matt Taibbi discovered the lies behind Hamilton 68. He even discovered that Twitter itself became aware of the Hamilton 68 lie in real time, and some high positioned Twitter executives were extremely upset about the fraud. Despite Twitter’s ruffled feathers, ultimately the company decided not to go public about the Hamilton 68 fraud. Many within Twitter were afraid of the backlash they would receive from the Biden administration if they exposed it. The secret would have been kept permanently had Musk not released internal information from Twitter (which Taibbi stumbled upon accidentally).

Intelligence Operation

Many of the Board members linked to Hamilton 68 are former US Intelligence Officials. Hamilton 68 is a project of the Alliance for Securing Democracy at the German Marshall Fund of the United States. Hamilton 68 was the first project of its kind back in 2017. According to Taibbi, we now have multiple Hamilton-like misinformation engines coming out of Think Tanks and universities being utilized by the media around the world. There is certainly a strong case to be made that these new "misinformation products" are actually misinformation operations run by US Intelligence Agencies.
